The Council of Nicaea in the hymnographic texts of the Orthodox Church

This article examines the reflection of the First Council of Nicaea in the hymnography of the Orthodox Church. The central themes are the confession of the consubstantiality of the Son with the Father, the anti-Arian polemic, and the perception of the Nicene Creed as a «divinely written» expression of the apostolic tradition. It is shown that the hymnography actively uses biblical typology: Arianism is viewed as a deadly heresy (the Tower of Babel, the «Egyptian serpent»), and the fathers of the First Council of Nicaea are viewed as «new» Old Testament righteous men and prophets. The hymnographic «portraits» of the key participants of the Council are analyzed separately. The conclusion is that hymnography forms a «popular theology» that anchors the Nicene Confession in the consciousness of the Church and expands the historical memory of the Council beyond strictly documented facts.
