The «History» of Michael Attaleiates, covering the period 1034–1079, is an important source for the political, cultural and social history of the Byzantine Empire in the XI century. Attaleiates (c. 1030‑c. 1085) was not only a historian, but also an active participant in the events of his time. His work covers such events as the military campaigns of the Byzantine emperors, internal political conflicts and cultural changes. Michael Attaleiates was at the epicenter of Byzantine political life and therefore often allows himself to express subjective opinions about the actions of the emperors, which makes his notes a valuable source for understanding how contemporaries perceived historical events. His keen eye for detail and ability to analyze events make the «History» an important work for researchers.
