Imagery of bodily afflictions and illnesses in psalm 37: a hermeneutic analysis

Abstract

This article examines the imagery of bodily afflictions and illnesses presented in Psalm 37, which is part of the Hexapsalmos (Six Psalms) in Orthodox worship. The study draws on the Church Slavonic text of the Psalter used by the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as patristic commentaries. Particular attention is paid to the fact that the psalm is perceived in worship not only as a biblical text reflecting the historical circumstances of its composition, but also as a personal prayer for each Christian. In this context, various interpretations become applicable and meaningful for each worshiper. The text of the psalm describes various bodily afflictions. Within the patristic tradition, these psalms are interpreted in various ways. Some literal explanations understand the psalmist’s suffering as a physical illness befalling him as a result of sin. However, there are also interpretations that view the suffering of the flesh as an expression of the gravity of sin or an indication of the emergence of lust in the bodily organs. The most common interpretation is the allegorical method, in which bodily images are understood as indications of spiritual ailments. The use of Psalm 37 in Orthodox worship allows every Christian to perceive its words as their own address to God, lending practical theological significance to the study.
