The proposed article opens a series of articles on the history of the names of church household items borrowed from the Greek language, starting with the names of church vessels (alavastr, diskos, kivorii, lampada, potir). The first of these articles is devoted to the noun alavastr. Attention is paid to the origin of this word, its semantics in the source language and in the history of the Russian language, as well as the ways of its borrowing into the Russian language. A comprehensive linguistic analysis of the term alavastr, conducted by using dictionary materials from different eras, artistic and memoir texts, has not been previously undertaken in Russian science.
